Lastest chicks have me confused!

I've had chickens for three and a half years now. One of my favorite things with the chicks is to take them into the grass for fresh air and sunshine. Every batch of chicks I've ever had have run, stretched and dust bathed. These chicks are 4 weeks old and every single time I take them out they instantly lay down and sleep. I have tried everything to get them to play but they just sleep. When I put them back in the brooder they run all over. Are they just weird?

Sound like wanna-be cornish crosses to me.

They may not be comfortable in wide open spaces. Try putting them "in" a box. Cut the bottom and the top off so they can feel the grass, you can see them, and they don't feel quite out there for the world to eat.

They are Golden Comets and there are six of them. Thank you for the box suggestion. I did try something similar. Their brooder is outside not five feet from where I put them out.
