I have a question about breeding. I am new to raising turkeys and I purchased 3 "blue slate" poults last spring. We realized that one of the poults was considered a Lavender after we brought them home. They were sold to me as Blue Slates though. This spring I am going to start breeding and selling poults. My question is, if they produce any Lavender poults, is it common practice to still sell them as "blue slate" or would I only be able to sell the true blue slate poults.

I sell Blue Slate poults as Blue Slates, Self Blue Slates (aka Lavender) as Self Blue Slates and Blacks as Blacks. The reason that I mention Blacks is that Blue Slates do not breed true. Breeding a Blue Slate to a Blue Slate should produce 50% Blue Slate, 25% Self Blue, and 25% Black. Breeding a Blue Slate to a Self Blue should produce 50% Blue Slate and 50% Self Blue. Breeding a Blue Slate to a Black should produce 50% Blue Slate and 50% Black. Breeding a Self Blue to a Black will produce 100% Blue Slate.

I never had any problem selling any of the different varieties but I did make an effort to educate people about what they were and what the effects of breeding them could be.

I believe it is unethical to sell something as something that it is not. I am well aware that there are many that do not know the difference and use that as an excuse while there are others that know better and continue to sell things that are not what they claim they are.
