Hi all! I have some Lavender Orpington eggs hatching under some hens, and they come from my flock of 100% Lavender Orpingtons, no possibility of anyone cross breeding as I only have these and Seramas and they are seperate.

The chick that just hatched is almost ALL yellow with a spot of Lavender on it's back.

I'm not sure what this means? Can anyone explain? Thank you!

I had the same thing happen last year. I had golden sebrights, but when one of the eggs hatched it turned out to be a silver sebright. Maybe its just hidden genes or something :)

I think i figured out why. I have a roo and a hen in my flock (laying) that I hatched from the other flock members eggs last year...while they were being kept with other pure Orpington colors (blue, black, and buff roosters). The father of the hen or roo that produced this egg could have been one of those colors, even though it is Lavender. That's the only thing that makes sense.
What to call this one though...white? Hmm.

I like to keep the oddballs just to see what kind of genetics my birds are really carrying. I bet it will be pretty, regardless.

I will definitely be keeping it..Im sure it'll be gorgeous!! :) But will I be incorporating it into my flock of Lavenders..I doubt it! lol. I don't want to mess with the pure Lavender genes I have. Luckily I know which hen it is..it's the only possibility since the parents which I have all came from Fancy Chick..she was an offspring from them produced while they were kept with other Orpington colored roosters. So I'm glad I know.

Just wondering what I should do with the Lavender hen that produced this chick..as I sell hatching eggs I don't want to send anyone eggs from her. I'm still learning the genetics..so this is definitely a lesson.

@Kambrie..that is very neat :) I love Sebrights..we saw some at the show this weekend, and the kids immediately gravitated to them. My 6 yr old said they look like butterflies, which he loves! Thinking of getting some in the future :)

They are very pretty, and very sweet! I wish I still had mine. I had one hen that would fly up on to my shoulder and just sit there while I was feeding the chickens.
