Layer pellets

I have been feeding my RIR's layer pellets for a few months now. I went right from crackel to that. some day they eat a ton of it some days not. They are still a month or so away from laying time. Am I doing the right thing?

There are differences of opinion about when your ladies need layer feed. Some say not until they are laying eggs, some say before.

Personally, we mixed the last of the start&grow with the layer when they were 16 weeks old.

Read what the feed bag says. I think most put a recommendation for their idea of the proper age for switching to layer on the bag.

Thanks, I bought what I have under the direction of who I got the chickens from. I belive the birds had just got feathers and had just come off medicated feed when I got them. I looked at the bags last night and as it turnes out both bags are layer feed. they have been on it since the begining. They seem ok with it so I guess , it's all good.

Layer feed has too much calcium for young chicks, which can cause bone/skeletal deformities and also damage the kidney.
