Our hen is having a very hard time laying her first egg. She's trying but it's just not coming out. We have soaked her in warm water and put Vaseline around. That was 5 hours ago and she's still having hard time. Please help, let us know what we can do to help her. We have her in the house in the bathroom so the others won't bother her.

Welcome to BYC, sorry that you are having problems.

    Are you sure it's stuck?
    Can you see/feel it?

Yes I can see it trying to come out but it won't. We've given her two soaks, put lubricant around, massaged her and put her in warm dark spot. This morning still the same way. From everything I have read it should have passed by now. I don't know what else to do, can't afford vet and I don't want to lose her.

She still hasn't had the egg. Have her soaking in water again, put preparation h around the vent it's swollen. We don't want to lose her, what else can we do? We've also given her calcium, she won't eat or drink.

Yes when she pushes I can see it real good. It's not coming out as far today though. I'm going to read more about breaking it before I do it, want to make sure I don't hurt her. This is first time I've dealt with this. Thank you very much.

    Welcome To BYC

    How is your hen?
    Is she able to poop?

Dehydration can make it much worse trying to get the egg out - so push fluids - if need be, syringe or tube fluids into her.
Give her extra calcium - crush a Tums and feed it to her directly or dissolve it in water - then syringe it into her. Liquid Calcium would also be good if you have it (usual dose is 1cc - put check your label).

Hopefully she has passed it by now[IMG]
