Leave the egg in the nest?

Our BO has started laying (Finally!) The first egg she laid on the floor of the coop. The 2nd was in the nest box. Hubby said he was told to leave the egg in the nest box and it would encourage her to keep laying there. I'm afraid to leave it too long because I don't want to encourage egg eating, or have the egg get busted. We do have a "fake" egg in another nest box but she is ignoring it. Should we leave the real egg in the nest or take it out?

Congratulations on those first eggs! I would take the real egg out of the nest box. If she likes that nest, just put the fake egg in that one, hopefully she will keep using it. New layers sometimes take awhile to know what they are doing, they don't really know exactly when they are laying the egg, so floor eggs aren't that uncommon.
