Leg Bands on young chicks

Can you tell me the reason some people band their chicks. At what age is this done and how loose should it be. I have several different bread of new chicks, some that I have hatched and some will mature to be all white. I would like to be able to identify them?

Is this a good way to do so?

I have little colored rubber band on my chicks legs. they grow so fast and change so quickly I want to make sure I am following the growth of the right chick. The bands also can be used to identify the hen and roo used for that particular breeding. Many reasons for the use of land bands. I use mine for particular ID's.
