I used to use the plastic cuffs that you had to maneuver onto the legs. They worked pretty well but degrade from the sun and weather. I've seen some metal bands, but don't know which are better for not only longevity but also keep their markings for easy ID, comfort, and less likely to fall off.

...and, of course, where is the best place to get them?

On most poultry stock I use bandettes. Almost any poultry supply stocks them. I have had far too many injuries and deaths with birds getting hung up when ranging with metal bands.
 
They have color bands on ebay. I bought a bag of rubber band ones for my chicks and plastic ones for my adults and they both work great and are cheap. You just close the toes and slip on the band.
