My husband brought me home a chicken to nurse, from their store. It had the umbilical cord wrapped around its leg. My husband cut it off but you can see where the leg grew with the cord around it. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to save the leg. It still has good color, but the chick doesn't appear to use it. :(

That's great of you to help the little one, and very promising that the color is good. Does the foot have reflexes? Does it pull the leg away or grip with it's toes?

Hopefully it will start to use it as it heals, but you might have to make a chick chair or sling to get it to start slowly using it.

One of my first chicks tried a self-amputation using a thin piece of pine shaving and some poo. It swelled the leg up pretty good before I found her tourniquet an released it. I massaged the swollen part a few times a day and eventually it went back to normal. I was lucky to catch it fairly early before the leg died from lack of oxygen.

You may be dealing with the effects of that or possibly some pressure on the nerve in the leg. If you're willing, I would massage the leg and put it through regular range of motion exercises. The young have a remarkable capacity for healing and as long as she is otherwise healthy you can give her a chance.

Thank you both! I will check for reflexes.

Yes, looks like self amputation attempt. I was hoping massaging would help.

I think it will, once you determine how bad the damage is. If the band was just cut off today, I would wait until tomorrow to start massage, at least.

This chick is a couple of days old and the umbilical cord was probably on since in the egg. If left on much longer, the leg would have been cut off. I am not seeing real reflexes at this point. :(

On a good note, it is eating and drinking and the other two little chicks I have it with, seem to have accepted it. They were snuggled together this morning.
