What creates this color? Is it simply buff x blue or is there more to it than that?

That would not work. There is more to it than that.

I'm not quite sure what is meant by lemon. I'd guess its genotype to be something like ER//ER, Bl//bl+, ig//ig

Honestly, I'm not sure...I took blue cochins that had patches of buff and bred them to each other. While it's not a true lemon blue, it's a start. [IMG]

Your blue may or may not be ER (gold birchen), as often as not they are E (extended black).

If the blue was ER it is possible you might get to something resembling the photos I've seen, but if not I cannot see it happening. Buffs have quite a combination of genes & various reds which will often show in a cross. Most recognised colours have a particular gene(s) expected at the e-locus, without which the desired colour variety may well get close, but not quite get there.

I talked with a breeder once about lemon blue and he said it is a pretty complicated project that would require several breeding pens with different birds matched up for different reasons. I am sorry I can't be more help.

There's a post in the buy sell trade section selling lemon blue cochins, while the OP did not quite specify how they were made, he/she said the throwbacks could be buff, or blue. So I was guessing they were just blue x buff. Whatever they were, they sure were pretty... similar to the top pic above, but kinda different too. Go check em out.

Thank you Herechickchick.....what a lovely picture.

It looks like s+//s+ & not ig//ig. It appears to be a gold birchen with blue. [IMG]

Lemon Blue is the blue dilute form of Brown Red (sometimes called Black Gold). Just for reference...

Lemon Blue x Brown Red = 50% BR and 50% LB
Lemon Blue x Lemon Blue = 50% LB, 25% BR, and 25% Lemon Splash
Brown Red x Lemon Splash = 100% LB
Lemon Splash x Lemon Blue = 50% LB and 50% LS
Brown Red x Brown Red = 100% BR
Lemon Splash x Lemon Splash = 100% LS

This is a Brown Red female

Which E-allele is brown-red? I know it's a crow wing, but am not sure which E that translates as.
