I’ve actually been a non-participating BYC member for 5 years but now that I’m retired I should have more time to participate, right? I started with 6 pullets ( 4 barred rocks and 2 buff Orpington) and 2 hens ( comets) 6 years ago. The last comet hen died about a month ago, so she was 6 years old and still laying. At one time I had around 60 chickens of various breeds but now there are only 13 hens and one rooster. The are all mixed breeds with the exception of my Minorca. They are all at least 4 years old. I also have 9 Serama. When this flock is gone, I’m uncertain about getting more. Hard as you try to keep them safe, it’s heartbreaking to lose them to raccoons, foxes, hawks, and snakes. I also enjoy spending time with my children and grandchildren, making quilts, and working in the yard. My husband and I live in Florida. I’m a retired midwife and he is a retired Air Force pilot.
