I have a few young racers (5) that I bred. They have been living with my young guineas in an outside pen screened on all sides. I rigged up a way for them to go out into a little pen and then outside. Two came back in just fine...I am hoping that the other 3 will figure it out! THey were up in the tree near the pen when it got dark tonight...I sure hope the owls arent hunting! I am going out to check if they went in now that it is full dark. Wish me luck! TErri O

Well, not really! Last night the guineas were making a racket at about 4:15AM--I went out and didnt see anything like owls or such. Did a little shouting and banging of doors...the birds were all quiet for the rest of the night. I caught two pigeons that didnt go in and put them in the cage; blocked the door so they had to stay in...this morning all 4 were on top of my chicken coop! THey pushed the door to the side cause they wanted out I guess! Tonight two were back in and two were on top of the cage. I am hoping that they learn to go in before they are eaten! I think one is gone already...I have only seen 4 now for two days.
I am hoping that no one thinks me irresponsible for letting them out to fly...they seem to be having such a grand time out there swooping around! I love to watch them...and I wish I could fly with them! [IMG] Terri O

Yep it a great feeling to let them fly. you made want to get a trap door, so they are not out 24/7 just two time a day. if not the cooper hawks will make a meal out of them.

What i loved about racer ,i could take them out of State ,they will return from hundred of mile. I had many that return from 500 miles.

WOW! FIVE hundred miles? THat is incredible! Where do you suppose they end up spending the night on the trip home? I cant imagine that they could fly straight through. Wouldnt it be neat to attach a leg-cam on them? Now that would be neat....Terri O

ETA: I have been looking at traps to make for the door I have....

Yes some of those were what call day birds....500 mile in one day, others would find a place to roost.
