letting chickens roam

I have a coop and run in the backyard, Want to turn chickens loose in whole yard. Problem is 16x32 pool. Will the chickens(RIR) avoid the pool or not?

Hello and welcome to BYC. I can't answer your question, but even if they avoided the water, I'm sure they'd leave you plenty of "little gifts" that you may not appreciate being squished between your toes

I have read of chickens drowning in ponds and watering troughs. If they lean in to have a drink and fall in they won't float for long as their feathers don't have a lot of waterproofing, and they can't swim. I personally wouldn't risk it.

I've seen too many pets drown in pools and that includes chickens.

Chickens do not float long and can become water logged.

I would fence them off from the pool

I reckon they would not avoid it; I have ponds and my gals prefer to drink from them than their actual water containers if they have a chance. I agree with the others in that it is better to be safe than sorry.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.
