I thought it would be fun to share pics of our beloved LGDs with their charges.

I have a 6 MO old Pyrenees named Harrah and a 5 yrs old rescue Pyr named Taylor.

Here is Harrah with her chicks![IMG]

Ill join in!! I have 2 Colorado Mountain Dogs, Toby (9 months) and Sebastian (4.5 months). They're the best, even though they're young Toby has already saved our girls from 2 hawks and done a great job at keeping the raccoons and coyotes out.

Yeah the breed is new and pretty much local to Colorado, they were started here about 8-10 yrs ago. They're basically a Pyreneese/Maremma/Anatolian mix. The goal was to create a dog for small acreage homesteads that was a good guardian but also great with people and kids. They've been great so far, extremely smart and very gentle and trustworthy around people and kids.

I love that you have a working rescue! We tried to rescue but we had trouble finding some, and when we finally found a pair they wouldn't adopt to us! It was a pair of 2yo pyrs who had been LGDs and their farm was sold... the rescue said all their dogs had to sleep inside and that they wouldn't adopt to working homes, saying it was cruel to not allow dogs to sleep in the house with you.

We own and breed Turkish Kangals on our farm in Michigan, worth their weight in gold.

Yeah I don't know why they won't rehome lgds to working homes. They wouldn't know what to do as indoor dogs! That would be like a rescue refusing to rehome a border collie because the people wanted to train it to herd or refusing to place a retriever in a hunting home. Why wouldn't you want the dog placed where they will be used for their breed-specific purpose? I just don't get it!

Most non LGD people are total idiots when it comes to LGD lol. I have had animal control called on me because my dog was outside in the dead of winter 24/7. The problem in the US is that dogs are nothing but pets to 99% of people. Dogs were originally bred to all have a job to do, they were employees basically but over time and here in the US they have turned into just pets. Besides hunting and maybe law enforcement and us LGD people dogs are just lap pets and people dont have a clue what a working dog that is actually being used as a working dog is. I try and explain but it rarely works lol.

Yeah I agree. I've seen Pyrs kept as indoor pets and people don't understand why they do what they do. I try to explain they're trying to do their job and treat their people like livestock. The instincts are there whether they like it or not! It's not fair when the dogs get scolded or punished because they're put in a position to fail because their instincts are contrary to what the owners want. There are tons of pet breeds but people just buy what's pretty to them with no regard for its initial purpose.

Our dogs love us but yes it they were not doing their job they would be miserable and given their behavior and personalities I cant fathom having one in the house I think it would be a frustrating disaster lol. We are in N. Michigan and have 3 and they have never been inside, we breed as well and puppies are born in the barn between two chicken coops and never come in.

The kangals are more vicious right? We have wild pigs here and I worry about my pyrs whenever we are out in the woods. I have been thinking about bringing a more fierce breed in to kind of be the GD for my LGDs lol
