What is the lifespan of a well cared for chicken? I am just wondering how long I can expect my chickens to be around for. I have been reading that they live on average for about 10-12 years, but some things I have read seem to suggest a much shorter time. I am just wondering if people out there can tell me about their experiences?

My oldest chicken is 10 1/2 years old, and she even lays an egg occasionally!
If predators don't get my chickens, or illness (or some other disaster) they usually live anywhere from 6 to 13 years.

Good question! Something I’ve been wondering myself!

By the way, how’s your lavender Orpington doing?

It depends on the breed somewhat too.
High egg producing breeds (production) don't live as long.
    A couple years only.

She is! She started pecking me in the back all the time when I would be bent down cleaning the run, so I finally got sick of it and poked her in the back with my finger and she has not done it since, LOL!
