lights? in maine

So this is our first time with chickens & we're in Maine. When do we start using a light? Also, in the winter should the light be a heat light?

You don't have to use a light. However, with shorter days and cold weather egg production will slow or cease. I live in Illinois and only use a light as heat when it gets below freezing.
