Lime or DE??

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will pop in.
I use both. I put DE in their food, in the run and in the coop. Lime I put just in the coop under the litter or mixed in.

I use DE in the coop to kill off bugs. Hydrated or Garden Lime burns chickens feet so when I use that on the outside runs I make sure to keep the chickens off it for a few days if using the Garden lime. Hydrated lime I keep them off for 2 weeks til it soaks in good by raining or watering it with a hose.

There is another kind of Lime. The kind they use to line sports fields. Dolomited (sp) Lime. It's safe and non caustic and I have read on here that it's good for smell, acidity and killing microbes. There is no wait time but I wouldn't spread it on a windy day it's very flour like and likes to blow.

My "urban" coop is only 6 feet from the side of my house and 20 feet from my neighbor's. I use DE in the run and under the pine shaving bedding in the coop, as well as in the chicken's food and in my garden. It's been really hot and wet here, and we have no smell [neighbor verified], no flies, and no garden pests.

In fact, my mother came by today and remarked that all of my veggie leaves looked so healthy and bug-bite free. She also asked how often I clean the coop, because it smelled NICE! [the answer is that I swap out part of the bedding once every two weeks].
