Our 1 year old buff Orpington has had a minor limp since she was a few months old. This week she has a severe limp. We checked the bottom of her foot for any sores and did not find any. One of her toes looked a little crooked yesterday and today it looks very crooked. This evening her toe nail fell off - some dried blood but not actively bleeding. She also had watery stool when you picked her up yesterday - not sure if she still does. Today she was also panting a lot - it’s about 80 degrees out. She is drinking and eating. Any ideas? Would you put her in a separate cage? Other hens don’t seem to be bothering her.

PLEASE post some photos! Hen, feet, toes, toenail

Sounds like she may have broken or fractured her toe. If it's been more than a day, likely you won't be able to repair it, but if it's really bothering her, then you can try taping it to stabilize it a bit until it heals. If you do tape it, remember not too tight and please check the foot and change the tape regularly. If the foot gets wet/soiled, etc. it needs tending.

She's eating/drinking. If she's not getting picked on, then why separate her? I've had birds break toes, they healed crooked but they did just fine.
