I just got a new chick, and I am concerned that the little guy may be pecked to death. Should I have room for concern or not? Is it a territorial thing? Thanks so much, I am new to farming my silkies!

I don't know enough about your circumstances to make an intelligent recommendation.

How old is the chick, what other chickens do you have (age and sex), how much room do you have, what do your facilities look like, and what is your weather like?

I've had a broody wean her chicks at three weeks old and those chicks were able to make their way with the flock, but with a young chick like that there are a lot of risks. In the heat of summer, those three week old chicks did fine but in colder weather they could have been in real trouble. But the broody probably would not have weaned them at that age in cold weather.

When a broody raises chicks with the flock she handles integration. There are still pecking order type issues but if they have space the young ones can handle those. They just stay away from the adults. But young chicks not integrated are at a very real risk. And the chick being a single makes it harder.
