So far, I have bought live chicks and raised them in a brooder. This year, our Golden Laced Wyandotte went broody for the first time. After mysteriously losing her first egg, I popped another hen's egg (Cuckoo Maran) under her, just to make her happy. Little did I know that that egg was fertilized. Long story short, it hatched into the cutest little mix of a CM and a Bantam Cochin. Mom and Little Peep have been living in the grow out pen for the last two weeks, coming out as mom sees fit. It has been so fun to watch her teach Peep how to eat, scratch for bugs, take dust baths, and follow mom around the yard. Today she got her up on the big girl roost in the coop. The other hens are keeping their distance from LP, slowly integrating her into the flock. So far, it has been much easier than raising them in a brooder and then introducing them myself. They are so fun to have and to watch!
