We are having rain here and where I live it will go without raining and then the skies will open and it will flood us. My chicken coop has a watertight house they can hang out in and then a "yard" for them made from a 6x8 dog kennel someone gave us a long time ago that I covered in chicken wire. So anyway it started raining and I checked the weather and noticed it is supposed to rain for the next couple of days. I didn't want the chickies to be stuck in their house so here I go in the pouring rain to try and figure something out. So I found our old pool cover that used to cover our big 16 foot across round pool and threw it over the top of the fenced part. Then I realized that even though the top has chicken wire it is not going to hold the puddle that is going to form in the middle of the cover. So I went into the wooded area next to the house where we put old scrap wood and found a piece of plywood that goes all the way across the top of the fence part and covers most of the length. Then since it doesn't cover it all the way and I don't want the rain blowing into the sides I put the pool cover over that. So now the yard is water proof and it is sturdy on top and won't come collapsing down from water gathering in the middle. Then I swept out the wet hay and put in new dry hay. They were so happy and came out of the house where they were huddled up and starting playing in the hay. So now when it is over I will have to keep the cover folded and put it in the big outside bin I keep the hay in for just in case. And it will be good for winter because it is the kind of cover that keeps the water warm by drawing in the sun's heat and not letting it escape so I am guessing it would do the same for the inside of the yard part. It also has a drawstring around the edges and since it fits perfectly over the fenced part I can pull the drawstring around the bottom and it will stay over it and not get blown by the wind.
Anyway the point of my title was that I came back in after a long time of doing all this and I was soaking wet. My husband looks up and says " I thought you were just going out to feed the chickens?" I gave him my long explanation of everything I did and he shake his head and says "only you would go out in the rain and do all that to make sure the chickens had somewhere dry to play even though they have a perfectly fine house to sit in and wait out the rain. I laughed and said I doubted it
