lonely chick?

    1 out of two of my RIR sadly died today, the other one is chirpping non-stop but is eating is she lonely or missing the other chick? im getting 2 ones tmr

    She's lonely and missing her friend. Chicks are social animals.

    Sorry you lost a chick. Yes, your remaining bird is very lonely as they are a flock animal and being alone is distressing to them. It is good that you will have more chicks tomorrow, in the meantime you can try putting a feather duster or other comfort item (some folks use fuzzy stuffed animals) in with it to try to provide some sense of comfort.

    You can comfort the lonely chick by rigging up a heating pad "cave" for it. It will simulate the warmth and darkness of a broody hen and if you form the pad into hill and valleys, it will also simulate the warmth and closeness of other chicks.

    In fact, go to "Mama Heating Pad for the Brooder" thread for instructions on brooding with the heat pad. It's superior to heat lamp brooding.
