Up until last week I had two hens in my chicken coop that were raised together since they were chicks.

I lost one of the hens to a raccoon. Now I only have one chicken.

I know chickens are social animals and I worry that my lone chicken will miss company.

However I also heard that chickens can be very protective of their home. I worry if I get some more chicks and attempt to introduce them to my chicken, they will fight and I'll have a whole new set of problems.

I'm not interested in having 2 coops.

    Any advice?

I have a similar problem... i have introduced new hens, one of which was a pair but now she is single... she sits by herself in a corner all day and doesnt socialise with the other chickens unless the little ones annoy her then she pecks them to go away.... im thinking i might have to get another one like her (she is an orpington so doesnt like roosting or flying, where the others all sit as high as they can get)

after about 2 days the hens have all worked out their pecking order and get along great!

You can mix new chickens with old in your pen. Just try not to interfear when they peck eachother. They are just trying to work out whose boss! (unless there is blood)
