I am an Ag teacher/FFA Advisor in Alabama. I’ve lurked around a bit (stumbled upon some interesting things about a family member oddly enough) and finally pulled the trigger today. I’ve had chickens in the past, and my program currently has a flock. We have a few from various breeds as well as crossbred hens and roosters.
I’m looking forward to learning what I can and networking along the way.

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. Thanks for supporting FFA! Wish it was more available to kids as it would be good for them in more ways than one. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember from this thread. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Hello The Owl,
It's always nice to hear from fellow owl lovers that are chicken lovers too. Kind of an oxymoron here, unless you raise your birds for the freezer. I've done that but at present I only raise my flock for eggs and cause I just like them so much.
I am finally getting a few more eggs since daylight has returned and I am able to keep their coop door (garage) open more. I don't supplement with light during the winter so the girls have a break. I keep the light on in a part of the garage they can access if they want to but it's not in their area directly.
Tell us more about your flock and program as our interest lies in those areas respectively. We love anecdotes and wisdom and I'm sure you have a lot to share.
Here's the boss, Copper

We have welsummers, barred rock, buff orpington, RIR, and Americanas. Our crossbreds are all of the former minus the Americana crossed with a white leghorn rooster. They should begin laying in a few weeks.
We aren’t breeding to sell chicks. We crossbreed for feed efficiency, forage ability, and performance based on our climate. It also gives great lessons in genetics, fertility, hatchability, and feed ratios.
We will add purebreds into the flock as we go. If anyone wants to donate some birds let me know ;)

G’Day from down under The Owl :frow Welcome!

I am pleased that you have delurked and hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
