Yes, that is a blood ring-had a chick in it and it died-all the blood has pooled to create that ring:-( Im sorry

Yes the egg is dead. I beilieve that its called a blood ring. I just had a couple of duck eggs do that, and unfortunetly I dont know what causes it.

Sorry you lost one. I don't think it means you did anything wrong, though. Some are just not meant to fully develope. I know EE's have a certain gene that causes the embryo to die. I read it in a book "Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds" Very interesting. Now I know why some of my EE eggs wont hatch.
