Our neighbors (who are new to living in the country) got their daughter a rabbit for Christmas. Turns out, the daughter is allergic to bunnies.

We'd been mulling over the idea of taking their rabbit for awhile - we thought it would be nice, since their daughter could still come over and see it, you know? But we decided that we didn't want to take on anything else that poops.

Plus, our other bunny is an outside rabbit, and this one has been kept inside and can't go outside now until spring - and our small house is already stuffed full of four cats, 5 people, and two 80-pound dogs as it is. So, the consensus was no more bunnies.

So, we offered to take the bunny to our 4-H meeting last night, have the rabbit project leader look it over and tell us what gender and breed is was, and try to find it a home.

Turns out, the bunny is a she, she's an adorable mini-rex mix, still very young (the neighbors picked her out from a litter of babies sometime in November or December), and her name is Cuddles. She's very calm and affectionate. We brought her back home with us and she's living in the kid's room until it's warm enough to go outside.

Do any of you have stories about animals you swore you weren't going to keep, but ended up with them anyway? I'd love to hear them - it'll make me feel so much better about being such a softie!

She's very pretty.
Yes, after I caught Kitty as a three week old feral orphan at my workplace, DH agreed that I could bring her home for the weekend, until we could find her a home. I'd heard from my boss that a woman at one of the other offices wanted her if anyone could catch her. Turns out the woman didn't want her at all. That was 3 years ago and Kitty is still here. She started out as an outdoor cat only, DH's insistence. Then a part-time indoor cat whenever the chickens were out, again at DH's insistence. Now she's a full time housecat and most nights you can find her curled up in DH's lap.

Yep, her name is Tootsie, and she is a 2.5 lb chihuahua. How could a dog so small be any work, my husband was so mad when I brought her home I thought I'd never here the end of it. That was 7 yrs ago, and now she is the apple of his eye. I work at a pet grooming shop and Toots is a huge hit, people freak out when they see her because she is very tiny, and one of the most loving little dogs, she is not the typical feisty chihuahua. I found her in a feed store in a small town while on vacation and I just couldn't let her stay there, best thing I've ever done.

Do you have an hour?? I once babysat a Doberman, just for a few days, while a co-worker was moving. Needless to say, I never saw or heard from her again. The doberman was a lovely girl, who grew old with me. And that is just the beginning....

That's how I ended up with both my cats too.

One was dumped on the side of our road as a gangly kitten who was just losing her milk teeth, and the other was found as a tiny kitten under a neighbor's old trailer just a few days before he had it demolished! I actually have a picture of him that I took while I was trying to entice him out from underneath the trailer one night. We ended up catching him in a live trap. We had a friend who was going to adopt him, but backed out because a cat showed up and had kittens in her garage. By then, we were too attached to him to let him go:

And, that's (sort of) how I ended up with my GSD last summer. My neighbor (not the same ones we just got the bunny from) adopted him from the local shelter I volunteer at, and then realized he didn't have time for such a big dog. When the dog got loose one day, the sheriff picked him up and the neighbor called to tell me he wasn't going to go claim him! I didn't want to leave him at that shelter, so I went and got him, planning to turn him over to a German Shepherd rescue. Guess what? He's still with me.

At least I'm not the only one who always gets won over by those big, liquid eyes.

Yup. I got talked into taking my dog, sadie, home by a local policeman. begged me to take her, and said that if I wanted to keep her just take her so he wasn't truning her into animal control. And to put up flyers and adds around town to find the owners. Well, turned out my neighbors moved away and turned the dog loose. Three years later I still have her.

We went to the farmers' market for lettuce, and came home with a Bouvier/GSD puppy. Grew to 112 lbs, and the best dog we ever had. His name was Cassidy...he died of bone cancer at age 11

We still miss him very much (and it's been years since he passed).

I also have a donkey that I got due to taking her in for a friend for training. She ended up to ONLY like me and will not do a thing for anyone else so I am stuck with her.
