Hi all - we live in Lakeside, on about 1 acre of land on a private road that winds up a hill. Our neighbors all have about the same or more (one even raises goats), so it's a low populated area. No problem with the 50 feet from another house rule. However, the private road is off of a... decently used street (Los Coches, or 'old hwy 80') in a residential area. So I'm guessing we don't benefit from any farm zoning. I can't for the life of me find a zoning map for Lakeside. (Santee, sure, or El Cajon, but no Lakeside!)

I tried asking local animal control, and they have told me '2', '6', and '25' at different times / different people at the same organization. They did the same thing about number of cats or dogs I can own, they don't seem like they know jack sh*t about it and are rattling off a number depending on whether they are in a good or bad mood or if they like the animal you are asking about. Really. I had the same person tell me two different things during different calls in the same week. I had one tell me (after not knowing), 'you'll know if we come take them'! Wow! At least I didn't give them my address. [IMG]

So, my fellow chicken hobbyists in the area - could anyone give me solid numbers? Or any other rules? And, if possible, ways to be allowed to have more? (Will neighbors signing work? Or a permit? Or...?)

Hi Lakeside neighbor! We live just over the hill from you off Winter Gardens Blvd. My daughter is in 4H and has a Bantam rooster for showmanship and I'm planning on getting 4-6 hens soon. Your question got me wondering about the zoning laws so I did a bit of digging on www.sdcounty.ca.gov and finally got a decent amount of information regarding our property. We're on a private road backing up to the open area to the west of Los Coches on 1/2 acre. For our parcel, we can have 25 chickens and the coop has to be setback 60ft from the center of our street and 10ft from our side and rear property lines.

I assume your property would have similar zoning, but if you want to check for sure, use the info here: http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/pds/zoning/formfields/PDS-318.pdf to search for your parcel number and zoning. The Animal Schedule on page 4 of this document: http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/pds/zoning/z3000.pdf will tell you what you can have and do on your property.

If you have any questions, let me know.

    Thanks!
    Andrea
