I am looking to add to my flock of 21 hens. I live in northern Maine and the climate is cold so it has to be a hearty breed. I sell my eggs so good egg producer is also a must. Any thoughts on what breed I should look into??

Anything common or popular will do, but pea combed and rose combed birds do best.

Easter Eggers, Wyandottes, Chantecelers. . .

And then there's common breeds who seem to do well wherever you raise them -

Plymouth Rocks, Orpingtons, Production Reds, Australorps . . .

Rose Comb Brown Leghorn -- They will produce at least 5 large white eggs a week each, and the rose comb is not likely to get frostbite.

Rhode Island Red -- These are hardy chickens that will lay about 5 large brown eggs a week each.

Red Sex-Link -- this is a hybrid that will lay about 5 large brown eggs a week each.

Oh, forgot to mention them too. Yes, if you're looking to keep hens, just about any common breed will end up friendly.
