This is for our school at Saint Mary's. We are working on teaching children value of farm animals, showing and agriculture we are in Downey California. I spent all day in Norco and Bloomington Ca. Yesterday but none were sexed or show quality. They advised me to contact private breeders. NO ROOS PLEASE [IMG]

Silkies are extremely difficult to sex before 4-5 mos. of age and sometimes not until they crow or lay an egg. If someone offers you a young chick and says it is a pullet, I would do an about turn and head out the door.

Once you have 20 posts you can participate in the BYC buy, sell, trade forum. Usually breeders who keep birds that long, tend to keep them for personal show prospects.

You could try the various silkie threads. There is one called Only Patridge silkies, so that may be of interest to you. I generally lurk on the "Silkie thread." which is the longest running, I believe.

Hello, and welcome to BYC![IMG] I'm glad you joined our community.

Drumstick Diva has given you some good advice. Very few breeders of show quality birds sell sexed chicks, of really any breed (until the chicks are several months old). Sillkies are even harder to sex.

I would check out the Buy-Sell-Trade section to see if anyone has some Silkies for sale: Buy ~ Sell ~ Trade I hope you can find what you're looking for! I've never kept Silkies before, but they've always seemed like a nice breed.

Hatchery stock is nowhere near show quality.
