lost Lyra today :(

I've lost my cayuga Lyra today

she had just started brooding her 5 eggs, thats where I found her,

somehow sbe was crushed beneath the VERY light board that i used as nesting places. I'm not sure how or why she was squished, but she would have been able to have moved out from under it, her eggs were still slightly warm,one was broken, it was fertile, I am hoping atleast one of her four remaining eggs are too, I put them in the bator, I am going to get actual nest BOXES done ASAP.

aww that's horrible. She wouldn't leave her nest for that board, what a good mom. Sorry you lost her.

She did have a VERY strong mothering instict, even long before she was well old enough, last fall she "raised" 5 two week old Muscovy ducklings.

and I only waited until she finally started laying, even then her only BAD habit was being "nun" duck, she only ever let Jacobi the mallard drake mate with her, and even that was very seldom she's allow it.

the cracked egg was one of only MAYBE 6 fertile eggs from her.


I'm praying to the duck-gods for babies from her.
