Just needed to vent with someone that I lost my Lizzie a couple of days ago.
Being the garden was fairly complete, we turned the chickens loose to cruise the yard. They have been looking forward to it all summer.
We know the dangers but every year we repeat the procedure. Nothing like watching chickens kick up the feet at running free.
Anyway, about 4-5 years ago our birds were attacked by a bear. Got most.
After that ordeal, we saw an ad for "Free Chickens". We checked it out and came home with 5 hens and a rooster. They have really been the best birds we have ever had. I think the secret was handling them. Petting, feeding them by hand and such. Well, I side track again! The sister, to the rooster, was a mostly black hen with a large tuffs of feathers on each side of her beak and a necklace of gold feather around the edge of her cape. I took a shine to her because of her beard( as I called it). She was a sweetie and a bit of a loner. Laid green eggs. Tried so hard for the past several years to get our broodie to hatch one of her eggs in hopes I would get a daughter like her. Never happened.
We have no idea what happen to Liz.........She just disappeared. Going to miss you Ole Girl.

Sorry to hear your hen dissapeared. Any hope that she has a hidden clutch of eggs somewhere and has gone broody?

I'm sorry to hear that [IMG]It sounds like she was an Easter Egger, maybe you could use this as an excuse to get more chickens? [IMG]
