I took my lavender cuckoo d'Anver pullet to the vet for the third and last time today. Never thought I wouldn't be able to cull a young one if necessary, but it didn't feel right.
She was 5 months old.She had a barking cough for a month and a half that I treated with a wormer, then with three different antibiotics the vet prescribed, and an anti-viral.
It turned out in autopsy she had a congenital heart murmur and had contracted fungal infection in her heart & lung from it. Her labored breathing went on a long time & got worse & worse.
She hadn't roosted for the last few days, and didn't enjoy her watermelon any more. I knew it was time

There is another d'Anver pullet who's her very best friend & is lonely without her.

She was gentle & quiet, and one of my favorite birds. We're going to bury her under a redbud tree we just bought to plant. She liked to sit in our other redbud. Just sad now....
