Our first layer, Red, was a gentle bird that would perch on my wife's head. We lost her today after only 7 months, we raised her from a day old chick with 2 lakenvelders. (we started with 4 but my 2yo grandson got hold of one of the sexlinks the first week). It seems the dog had had enough and killed her. I was sitting in my room when my wife came in and told me. I rushed outside, but it was too late, Red was dead. I wanted to get my gun and shoot the dog. it's not the first problem with the dog, but it will be the last, the dog is going away. My Granddaughter is heartbroken, she loved that chicken, She took great delight in going out every day to get her egg.

R.I.P. Red, you will be missed.

  3. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Too often our predators seem to be built in to our family units. Very young children, household pets, etc. I know you will greatly miss Red and pray for your healing.

    Losing chickens always stinks.

It wasn't real clear in the post - is this your dog, or a dog-at-large?

Yes, unfortunately, it was my 26yo son's dog.

What have you done so far to train the dog not to attack chickens?
