Lots of pics: Speckled Sussex X Buff Orp -PIC on pg 1, 2 & 5

Tim, when you say 'speckled', I think of mottled. That is only one gene involved in the mille fleur pattern. There are several. We are working toward mille fleur orpingtons (aka jubilees). A select group of the largest birds here will be crossed to each other (bro/sis mating) to bring those recessive genes to the surface. Only a small percentage will come out mille patterned, but we will stay closer to orp type this way (versus going back to SS). I hope that made sense.

Thanks M & DD!

It is very common for het. (split) mottled birds to show mottling in their juvenile plumage. Sometimes the mottling shows as the occasional mottle in the adult plumage & sometimes it doesn't show at all. I wonder whether mottling expression may change on interacting with other genes.

Jody, would you consider adopting me? I would help with the chicken chores. I dream of land full of orps in all colors!

Thanks for sharing pics of your projects. You have wonderful birds!
