I hatched 11 Marans chicks from (cpartist) Luanne's eggs for the New Years Day 2011 Hatch .... Mahonri party!
I also hatched 5 LF Cochins (3 blue, 2 black) and 2 Icelandics in this hatch.
I'm starting this thread to document growth and development for Luannne.

Wow Kathy!! Great pics! Thanks for helping me track what my breeders
are throwing without me hatching a gazillion to do this. Most of these
chicks look Black Copper, but my Blue Coppers hatch out very dark
sometimes...you'll know better when the true feathers come in.
Statistically you should get 25% Blues, but you know how that is in a
small hatch. Looks like you have two clean shanked. These are likely
from Smokey. She only has one feather on each leg. I kept her in the
breeding pen because she lays a nice egg, and has great lacing and
eye color. I think shes throwing about half or more with leg feathering.
She is a butterball...

Kathy, you rock! Hope they are all girls for you

Kathy...I am going to give you an educated guess on gender...later you can tell
me how right or wrong I was

.

Since I've hatched quite a few of these, I've found that the ones with darker,
or barely noticeable combs are always pullets. MOST of the ones with pinker,
more visible combs end up being cockerels, but there have been a few
exceptions here. Secondarily, by three weeks of age the pullets are nearly
feathered out, the boys still have some down on shoulders and backs.

I know this is not true for all Marans, but with the ones I am working
with I can predict gender from the comb at hatch at about 80% and can confirm
at three week feathering at maybe 90%. Smokey was one of the exceptions.
She never had a large comb, but was slow to feather...I thought she was
a cockerel until she was two months old.

#1 Girl
#2 Boy
#3 Girl
#4 Girl
#5 Boy
#6 Girl
#7 Boy
#8 Boy
#9 Boy
# 10 Boy
#11 ? (can't see comb)

So I think you have AT LEAST 4 pullets,

, but hope for more.

I have pink leg bands. Do ya think that would help?

I was thinking #1 was male, because it had such thick legs. From the thickness of the legs, when I was banding them ..... I am thinking only 2 girls.

Right Purple and Right Brown are some beefcakes! I wouldn't be surprised if those handsome buggers were boys.

Left Yellow I'm thinking might turn out to be a girl.

But, - Nice organization going on and very cute chicks.
