I'm a first time chicken owner and I don't know how to tell the difference between a male or female. Also I'm not sure if my chicks are even the correct breed. Any advice would be helpful. I'm suppose to have 3 hens a barred rock light brahma and a buff Orpington 4 going on 5 weeks old. I have done research to try and figure out the gender and breed but I can't seem to decide on either. Any advice?

hello! It took me awhile to figure out my rooster was a rooster! We once thought he was a hen because he was so sweet. But having a sweet rooster is very uncommon. So I have some advice. Your rooster will try to "have fun" with the hens! [IMG]He will also flap his wings VERY often. You rooster will also strut around trying to look bold and manly!

    Good Luck,
    I hope this helps

I would vote boy on the brahma with that comb, its pretty dark for a light so may be a mixed color.
The orp looks like a girl so far.
The BR is colored like a girl with dark barring, even though she has a little more pink comb than I like to see.

I'd keep an eye on the Brahma, I agree it might be a cockerel. However, he'll probably lighten up as he feathers in and matures.

Ok I know this is a little off subject but do my chicks look small for their age (4 wks). I was looking at other peoples chicks and mine just seem smaller.
