I've assisted plenty. Actually 2 this morning. I usually just chip away shell and put them back in and they finish themselves. I've gone too far in the past and there's unabsorbed yolk so I try to wait it out. This morning I chipped away the 3 chicks. There were some blood vessels on this one, I put them all back and the two hatched out on their own. This one I chipped a little more away earlier this evening and still see blood. It's head is under it's wing. Is that where it belongs? If not, does that cause it to be unable to zip and does that cause it to not peck at and stop blood vessels or something (I can't even word this). I'm gonna leave it I guess until tomorrow morning, I can't assist and it bleeds to death. [IMG]

The beak is supposed to be under the wing, that is normal hatching position. That chick will likely be fine, however it might be good to moisten the membrane, and if it doesn't make progress on its own then it will need to be helped out, only make sure the blood vessels have diminished and the yolk sack been absorbed.

OK thanks. This has been a successful but weird hatch. Hopefully these vessels dry up eventually.

I'd say it should happen within the day, they usually dry up or shut down within about 24 hours of the chick beginning to hatch.

With that much exposed membrane you want to put a light coat of non pain medicated neosporin, Vaseline or coconut oil on it to keep it moist while the vascular system between egg and chick shuts down.
