I got one of them expensive brooder pads and plugged it into the thermostatic controller to 36c

The pad warms up fast to temp and turns off and on as needed

My problem is the thermostat can’t stay on the plate or on top and it won’t reach temp on the ground under there where chicks go as the heat rises and floor even at an inch never hits 36 it says that’s ok as they wil stand up onto the plate with their backs to get warm … ok greats

But I touch the plate and it bloody burnt me in 2 seconds I don’t want to scald the chicks but payed £100 for it and feel it’s dangerous

Do you have another thermometer to check the temp? But it might be faulty. If you feel it's too hot, return it and get your money back.

I actually had a similar problem with mine when I raised my ducklings. It didnt burn, though, was just quite hot against my hand. I raised it to a slightly higher level with that in mind, so that it wouldn't quite touch the ducklings, then measured the temp on the ground, it was pretty cool, maybe about 29 degrees C. So I used a heat matt (the kind you use against tanks of exotic animals) and slipped it underneath the brooder, under where the brooder plate was. I turned it to about full power and measured the temp under the brooder plate, about 36degrees C.
It covered about half the brooder plate, so the other half was slightly cooler.
It worked well for me like that, my youngest duckling used the warmer side of the brooder plate and my older duckling always used the cooler side. That was just my experience though. A lot of brooders would be difficult to slip a little heat mat under.
If yours actually burns you, dont use it. I would return it personally and get a replacement.
