Managing Silkies feathered feet in wet weather

Hi all,
I have 4 silkies and live in the Pacific NW. Their feet tend to get crazy dirty from being in mud and dirt - I am wondering if I can trim their feet feathers so they are not collecting as much mud/dirt? Has anyone done that and if so, what guidelines should I follow, if any?

I don't trim my silkies feet feathers, so I'll give you a bump. Hopefully someone will be along to tell you how it's done.
