The hens eyes should be orangey for sure, but usually they are a little deeper than the Roos

hhmm this will be interesting... i have 3 barred rocks already... how hard will it be to tell the cuckoo marans from the BR when they get to be the same size???
and do the cuckoo's lay the dark brown eggs too?? or am i stuck with a med brown with this color variation?? i was really hoping for the dark brown and a roo to mix with my light olive EE'r

Barred Rocks have yellow legs and Cuckoo Marans have pink legs. I don't know which hatchery you are getting your Marans chicks from but usually the hatchery stock does not lay eggs as dark as the stock you will get from private breeders.
But the eggs should be darker than the Barred Rock's, which are really pretty beige colored. At least my Barred Rock lays a very, light beige egg. The hatchery chicks won't have feathers on their legs because the hatchery birds are clean legged. But if you are just wanting some pretty eggs, that doesn't matter.

As luck would have it, I found a breeder selling 4 1/2 month old birds. They're from Bev Davis and Wade Jeane lines. I ended up getting a nice feather legged rooster from him as well. I still have my clean legged rooster, but the breeder pointed out that his coloring isn't quite right either.

Hey!

That rooster on the bottom is showing some early promising traits and color. His tail is not set high either. Can't get a good look at his earlobes, but they are looking kinda blackish, which will lessen the copper color your pullets show. Keep that clean legged roo just in case you need to get more copper color back in your hen flock the following year.

Unfortunately the girl who is laying the darkest egg has incorrect hackle coloring.
