Actually, the egg came first. Reptiles and dinosaurs were laying eggs for millions of years before the chicken ever existed.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.....

i disagree. Who would keep the egg warm in order for it to hatch?

The jungle fowl, or the jungle fowl's ancestor, kept it warm. Even dinosaurs made nests. There were eggs long before there were chickens.

ETA: speaking of which, did you know that even some birds today build nests but DON'T incubate the eggs themselves? They build up big mounds of dirt and vegetation over the eggs, so that the decomposition actually heats the eggs while they incubate. Very interesting stuff!

True... but still.. do chickens do that? I could see it being so warm that chicks hatched without a mama because that has actually happened to me before.. but who took care of the chicks if they where born with no adult bird?

Now you're changing the question. The question says "the egg", not "the chicken egg".

I think we are getting off topic.. lets just call it a draw for now and talk about this some other time.. lol

Yes, another thread perhaps?

Did anyones else get covered up with snow? We haven't seen this kind of snow for years and years.

None of my chickies would come out and play....

Hey, I like that teepee style run. I'll have to keep that in mind!

I wish I could find my camera. I would post pics of some of my Marans wading through all the mud here, and then I'd be right back on topic!
