I am raising some chicks for a project at school and I need a safe way to mark them to be able to tell them apart. I heard food coloring works. DO you have to dilute it or can I just put a little dot on them?

The issue with topical marking of the down is how rapidly they shed that down and, depending on breed, the color of the down itself. An easier way to mark them is to use leg bands (you can use actual poultry bands or even colored zip ties)....as you will be monitoring them anyway you will be able to keep an eye on the band and replace as growth makes it necessary.

if you do use leg bands make sure you get ones that will fit them when they grow up and if you do the zip ties make it a bit loose so you can cut it when they grow out of it. t
