haha, my son always gets mad when he sees the roosters mating the hens. I keep telling him, it's nature

But yes, a physical separation is the only solution.

Ok. I'm still debating if I even want to get a rooster. I was just going to get one for protection...... So, rooster or no rooster?

Your rooster can't protect the girls from the worst predators, and if you're not looking to breed, just keep, you probably don't want one.
