Ok, here's a pic of one of our hatchery Barred Rocks. I have one Barred Rock female who's very dark feathered, with a low, yellowish, just bumpy comb. Then I have another for-sure male with a big red comb that is on his 3rd day crowing. So he's a shoe-in.
But what about this guy?!? A friend wants a Barred Rock Roo, and I'd love to give him one but not unless it's 100% a Roo.
    Opinions??

Can you get a side shot? It looks like those saddle feathers are rounded!

I'll grab a better shot in the a.m. Thanks!
    Side shot, full body pic?
Do I need to fan out the tail feathers? Always confused as to what I'm looking for in terms of feathering...

A close up side shot is best. A good side veiw and the feathers just in front of the tail is what we are looking for!

They will be rounded for a female and pointed for a male.

That looks like a cockerel to me.

I'm having a tough time with BR identification. In another thread they said they could tell it was a cockerel because it was lighter colored. This one looks darker to me. I had a BR hen, but I never new the roosters were so strange. Do the neck hackle feathers not come in as long and pointy as most other breeds? I'm assuming you guys are saying this is a cockerel based on the large comb alone? Just trying to learn...

Yeah, I'm having a tricky time, too. This guy/gal isn't nearly as white as my obvious, red-comb/wattle, crowing Roo. I'll post pics of him tomorrow. And it's no where near as dark feathered as my very obvious hen.
I have 2 like this...middle-of-the-road coloring, comb & wattle apparent but not as obvious as known Roo.
    I'm so confused!
To make matters worse, I have two "Barred Rocks" hens that might actually be Black sex-link males!!! Ugh. I can't win!!!
