The pet food recall and the anouncement that Melamine was fed to hogs for human consumption got me thinking about my chickens. I plan on eating a few. Is there a way to find out if any of the tainted proteins are in our purchased chicken feed? Should this be a concern for us?

The way I understand it is that the hogs were fed expired cat and dog food that was contaminated. Why anyone would do that is beyond me...

That's why I buy all my meat direct from farmers that raise their animals on pasture, from start to finish. No feedlot confinement at all. Better for the animals, the environment, and more profit for local, small farms.

I wonder if the FDA would consider chickens pets or livestock...?

Its more than just pet food that has been affected. Livestock feed has been tainted as well. To find out if your brand has been affected check out their website, most companies have a statement. I feed blue seal brand and they have not been affected.
