Hello I'm katy. I have 8 kids, 2 great pyrenees and a cat who thinks he is a dog. I am purchasing a house with an acre of land outside the city limits so I of course I might as well have some chickes but I know absolutely nothing about them. But I have wanted them for about 8yrs now.

Hello there Katy and welcome to BYC! [IMG]

Well you certainly have come to the right place for all the fun and learning!

You will want to do some reading in our Learning Center. Lots of good articles on getting started, building the coop, raising the chicks, and keeping your adult flock happy, healthy and safe from predators... https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

And if you still have questions, we have many forums you can ask all kinds of questions! Chickens are a blast to keep. Of course what works for one may not work for you. There is a huge learning curve and over all, by watching your birds, they will train and tell you what they need. You learn as you go.

So make yourself at home here Katy, and ask any questions you may have.

Pull up a roost bar and join in on all the chicken chat! :)

Nice to meet you Katy. Have you checked to be certain chickens are allowed? Even outside cities, there are usually some restrictions based on area. Better to be safe than sorry.

    First off, good info here:

    https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/getting-started-raising-chickens

Then, you'll need to decide what you want (chicks or grown birds) and then make sure you have housing ready for them, and food. Coop designs and chicken feeding here:

    https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops
    https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/housing-and-feeding-your-chickens

The fun part is choosing breeds. Here are some guidance on that topic:
