My hens are all large fowl beautiful mix of birds... problem is i thought maybe they were molting. Now the irritation ia obvious and their skin is red etc..... What can i treat with to get rid of mites and lice that won't hurt my ladies??? I haven't visually seen either, but something is irritating them.

Sevin dust. They make both a natural one (green bottle) and 5% (red bottle). It is found in the garden section. Both work great but the natural one takes a little longer to kill them. Retreat in 7 days for mites and 10 days for lice. Also, clean and treat the coop really well. If you are not sure which one you have then do the retreat in 7 days. Mites are harder to see as they are as small as a pinhead and go onto the feathers and in wood cracks threw the day.

Here are some good links with pictures of the lice and mites, but the eggs at the base of feathers may be easier to spot:

The same powder or they make a liquid form you can spray it down with. ***If you use the liquid form make sure it dries before the chickens are allowed back in and remove feed and water before hand. The good news is it dries really fast even in a really humid area***
