How can I tell if my birds have mites

For mites you may have to go out with a flash light at night to check. They're very hard to see, but you should be able to see them on the birds during the night if they have any.

Another sign is matted "dirty" feathers on the undersides of wings and other areas.

Lice are easier to spot, they usually hang around the vent and neck area, and you can at least see their eggs. They are in white deposits at the base of the feathers.
