I hatched these couple of Roosters and a hen. I think they look good. They are about 9 months old. The hen should start laying soon. I was told that the old strains lay later but lay for a longer life time. I think they look good. The pictures don't really show them as good as they are. The rooster is missing some tail feathers from the kids next door and a couple have been trying to see who is the Cock of the pen. I only have 1 hen here at my house and 1 at a friends house. The rooster has a Speckeled Sussex in the pen I am holding for them. Please let me know what you think. I am also looking for some RIR hatching eggs but I am only looking for the older strains like these. Please if you have any let me know I would love to buy some. Pinegrove is sold out for the year already. Thanks to all. [IMG]

I want to make sure that everyone knows the above Rhode Island Red belongs to Pinegrove. I strive to get somewhere near this great looking bird. I think my hen is getting there but the couple of roosters I hatched need a lot to get near his.

The birds in picture 1 and 4 is no good, he is way to light in color, has lacing in his hackles and looks to have some feathers tipped in black.

The birds in 2, 3 and 5 are nice and should look nice once they fill out.

    There all Roosters also.. [IMG]

Are you guys sure they are all roosterss? The one that is the darkest has no spurs at all and she is never in a figt with the other roosters. The tail feathers also fan out differently and it doesa not have the hackels like the other birds. I will say this I have thought it might be a rooster because the tail feathers are so dark green but they do fan out differently. I also have seen other pictures that show the hens that look like that one. I have not seen an egg yet and they are ten months old so maybe that is it . I am going to look a lot closer and will let you guys know what I find out.

Punky are you saying they are all roosters? Yes I was thinking I had a nice dark hen. Please let me know what you meant. The bird I thought was a hen has no spurs, has never tried to crow, has not tried to mate with some hens I had in the pen. I will say this I have never had an egg yet and I have not seen any other Rooster try to mate with it. Please let me know what you think.

I have stock from PINEGROVE and love them. Beautiful animals..

Unfortunately, you have all roosters there.

I guess I am stupid. I now know why I don't have any eggs. I really thought that the tail feathers were a lot different, even the wattles are some different but the comb is not like the hens I had seen. I guess I am taking to much of my pain meds. Thanks a lot guys. Now for the better Question does anybody have any RIR eggs I can buy. I love the color of these birds and I really want stock off Pinegrove. I will cull the rooster that is lighter and keep the one I thought was a hen. It looks great to me. But hey what do I know I though he was a she//// Please let me know if anyone can help me out and sell me some eggs. I will take a dozen any time after this friday. Thanks to all and now I won't be looking eggs from a rooster!
I am stupid. I just went outside and checked over the RIR I thought was a hen. It is a rooster. It now has a small bud where the spur goes and I checked the hackels and they are there and I checked the tail feathers and I guess if HE raised them they would be correct. I guess he is so subordinate that he doesn't crow, fight or raise his tail feathers. Thanks to all and please if you have some eggs I can hatch PLEASE let me know and I will get right back to you. Our w2 forms just came and we will be fileing taxes on Wednesday. Thanks to all and I feel really DUNB>

At first I agreed with Dave and thought that was hen that just happened to be built like a linebacker that played for the Bears. I can also agree that I was wrong.
