Hey everyone,
One of the things our ducks miss the most in the wintertime is the lack of fresh greens to browse at. We found a quick and very easy solution in December: growing microgreens indoors, on old burlap bags. Our ducks love them!! On the left are week old Chia greens, on the right are mustardseed greens. Both of these get devoured on sight by our ducks:
We buy rice in 10lb burlap bags and use those, but any burlap will do. Simply soak the burlap, drain it, and scatter a 'mucilogenous' (sticky) seed type on the surface, and then water or spray it daily for about a week. We've had excellent results with chia seeds, mustard greens, and flaxseed so far, next we're going to sprout some wheatgrass. Each mat (we grow 4 at a time) has a small 13 watt compact flourescent light on it, which is all they need. Afterwards, the mats get washed out, and started over for next week.
The only thing missing, according to our ducks, are some fat worms hiding among the burlap!
